The Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner supports International Coastal Cleanup Day:

Parts of the Pacific Ocean contain more plastic particles than zooplankton.

An estimated 80% of marine debris originates from land based sources and 60 to 80% of all marine debris is plastic which is accumulating so much faster than it breaks down.

Marine debris threatens marine biodiversity through entanglement, ingestion, smothering of the seabed and reefs as well as toxic substances.

It is estimated that 90% of all seabirds and 52% of sea turtles will ingest plastic debris during their lifetime.

Each of us can make a direct impact on marine pollution through our own actions.

Our ocean cares for us – now is the time to care for our ocean.
